St. Pete Beach Travel Guide

St Pete Beach travel guide

Summer may be coming to an end, but I can’t stop thinking about our dreamy family vacation to St. Pete Beach, Florida. You guys already know that I’m happiest by the water, so this trip was one I was really excited about.

Although I’ve only been a couple of times, St. Pete Beach has quickly become one of our favorite family vacation destinations. It’s an ideal group getaway location for so many reasons — there’s no shortage of activities, it has a vibrant food scene (which you know is a must for me), it has stunning beaches, and the weather is pretty warm year-round. The only major thing to keep in mind is that you’ll want to avoid hurricane season when planning your trip.

I love that you can go with the flow when in a coastal environment, and similar to our trip to Rehoboth Beach, the great thing about St. Pete is you can kind of play things by ear. Based on the weather, you can choose to take advantage of all the great water activities like snorkeling, boating, and jet skiing, or if things take a turn, you can go shopping and enjoy some amazing restaurants.

This destination is the perfect getaway not only in the summer, but perhaps more notably for a fall, winter, or spring escape. Ditch the moody temperatures in exchange for a dose of sun (and pool-side drinks!) If you’re planning a trip or thinking about visiting, this travel guide will help you put together the perfect itinerary. I guarantee you’ll love it so much that you’ll want to come back — just like us!

Things to Do in St. Pete Beach

From beaches to baseball, there is just about anything and everything to do in St. Pete Beach. To help you organize your own trip, here are some of our favorite things to do in and near the area…

Beaches

The beach is of course the main attraction in St. Pete, and an added perk is that you can book a variety of activities directly from the sand. Where we were camped out, you could walk up to a cabana and sign up for almost any waterfront activity you could imagine — from snorkeling to jet skis, they have you covered. I found it so convenient that you could walk down to the beach and see what sounds good for the day (this would be ideal for parents traveling with young kids.)

Boat Cruises

During our latest trip, we took a boat cruise to Sand Dollar Island which was so much fun! It was perfect for the whole family and was filled with photo opportunities (you know I love a good photo opp) You might even catch a glimpse of a dolphin or two on your way out to the island. This would also be a special day date option if you’re traveling without kids.

Jet Ski

Although I typically opt for beach chair hangs (with a drink in hand), the crystal clear waters of St. Pete Beach are truly amazing to explore. The Gulf of Mexico waters are so warm and inviting, and cruising the coastline is a great activity for those who are looking for adventure.

Banana Boat

Calling all thrill-seekers! If you thought jet skis were adventurous, the banana boats provide even more fun. If you’re vacationing with a large group or with a couple of families, this is a great activity as it can accommodate up to 6 riders at once. You can find more info on rentals here.

Lounge by the Pool

If you are more my speed, lounging by the pool is always a great idea. The pool at the hotel was — the best part were the cocktails from Coconut Charlie’s Beach Bar.

Shopping

Looking to escape the sun and sand for a bit? Head into Tampa for some retail therapy. We stumbled upon the International and Bay Street mall during our first trip when our flight was delayed, and honestly, it’s a hidden gem. It’s packed with all the stores I love to shop from and has a variety of great restaurants. My kids even loved it (mostly because of the food court and cute juice bar!)

Tropicana Field

If you head to St. Pete Beach during baseball season, catch a Rays game at Tropicana Field. It’s centrally located and baseball games are such a classic, family-friendly activity that all will enjoy! Another perk is that this is an option that is affordable and great for larger groups.

John’s Pass

We have not had the chance to visit this famous boardwalk and village yet but our hotel recommended it for the kids. From what I’ve heard, there is no shortage of activities to take part in, ranging from shopping and restaurants to a water park.

Attractions Near St. Pete Beach

Day Trip to Tampa

I’ve already mentioned a couple of attractions and activities in the Tampa area, but you could easily consider taking a full day trip with the whole family. In addition to shopping and baseball excursions, there is a lot that Tampa has to offer. The Riverwalk in the downtown area is the perfect spot for visitors to walk, bike, and rollerblade along. You can scope out a variety of restaurants, stores, parks, and attractions, like The Florida Aquarium.

Disney World

Adding on a trip to Disney World may sound daunting, but have no fear, I have a Disney World travel guide that will make your planning a piece of cake! From hotels to restaurants (including the best stop for coffee) I’ve got a complete game plan to making it a trip to remember.

Where to Eat and Drink in St. Pete Beach

You all already know that I’m a major foodie, so I’m always on the lookout for the next best place to eat. Coastal restaurants are my favorite because you can get a great meal with a stunning view (not to mention that the seafood is so fresh.) Below, I’m sharing some of our favorite places to eat in St. Pete Beach — regardless of your cuisine preferences, there’s something on this list that you’re guaranteed to love!

Cafe Soleil

I can’t start my morning without a little pick me up (I know all the moms out there feel me on this.) This coffee shop is so cute — it’s light, bright, and airy inside with an adorable and cozy beach vibe. If you’re looking for a bite to eat, all of the croissants were amazing and tasted super fresh — the almond croissant was highly recommended.

Coconut Charlie’s Beach Bar & Grill

Located at The Hilton Garden Inn, this on-property restaurant is fantastic. There is live music, indoor and outdoor seating, and it offers the perfect combination of casual yet fun vibes. The drinks were so refreshing and the proximity to the pool made it perfect to stop by for a drink. Don’t miss out on the tacos!

Crabby Bill’s

The food, views, and vibes are not the only important factors when it comes to a good meal — service is equally important. Our experience at Crabby Bill’s was superior. The hostess provided great recommendations, the seafood was cooked perfectly, and every dish had just the right amount of spice.

82 Degrees

For sushi, coastal fare, and craft cocktails, head to 82 Degrees. We stayed at The Saint Hotel during our first trip to St. Pete Beach, and this restaurant was connected to the property. I would go back here regardless of where we’re staying, but I always think it’s a little luxury when there’s a great restaurant at your hotel.

Snapper’s Sea Grill

This is hands-down one of our favorite restaurants in St. Pete Beach. To no surprise, the seafood was great and the proximity to the beach was also a perk. It can be a challenge to find a more upscale restaurant near the beach, and while I wouldn’t necessarily say this spot is fancy, it is a bit more elevated than other local options. All the dishes were well prepared and we got solid service.

Shells Seafood – St Pete Beach

Do not sleep on this recommendation — they serve amazing margaritas and the shrimp pasta is maybe one of my top five favorite dishes of all time. Also, if you love tartar sauce as much as I do, you’ll be hooked!

Oyster Shucker Craft & Draft

Of course I had to save the best place for last. Ever since our first trip to St. Pete, my kids will not stop talking about the oysters we had from Oyster Shucker Craft & Draft. Needless to say, we had to come back. The BBQ baked oysters were a definite 10 out of 10 and we also loved the blackened shrimp and grits!

Where to Stay in St Pete Beach, FL

When it comes to finding the right place to stay, I know it can be one of the most daunting tasks. Especially when you’re traveling with your family, you want to make sure that where you’re staying is clean, accommodating, reasonable, and close enough to activities in the area. We have been so lucky with the two hotel properties we have stayed at and look forward to trying other spots in the future!

Hilton Garden Inn St Pete Beach

This is a relatively new property in St. Pete Beach and it’s great! The location is ideal because guests receive private beach access, it has an on-site beach restaurant and bar, and a nice pool for both adults and kids to enjoy. This is the perfect property for families as it checks all the boxes that you’d be looking for in a hotel. I loved that we had exclusive beach access and that we could easily book fun adventures from the sand.

Saint Hotel

During our first trip to St. Pete Beach, we stayed at the Saint Hotel and this boutique property exceeded all of our expectations. The lobby is welcoming and warm and the rooms made you feel like you were at home (cute decor, very clean, and a spacious layout!) They went above and beyond to set up the room for my daughter’s birthday and I really appreciated the hospitality and attention to detail — all which make for a memorable experience.

The Don CeSar

While we haven’t had a chance to stay here yet, this is known as one of the most iconic hotels in St. Pete Beach. You can’t miss it because it is pink — how cute is that?! It’s nicknamed the “Pink Palace” and all the reviews are super positive and remark on the beautiful beaches, great pool amenities, and the delicious gelato. I’m definitely bookmarking this spot for our next trip!
