How to Style a Midi Dress for Any and All Occasions

how to style a midi dress

I don’t know about you but I’m all about investing in versatile pieces that I can get a lot of wear from, regardless of the season or the occasion I’m dressing for. One of those items includes a midi dress, which offers so many options when it comes to styling.

Because midi dresses are so easy to layer with, they’re great to have on hand whether you need an outfit to stay warm and cozy in or something that’s good to wear in the heat of the summer. Another perk to midi dresses is that they’re comfortable, come in a variety of styles, and they can be dressed up or down, depending on your mood.

Overall, I would argue that a midi dress is as much of a closet staple a good pair of jeans and leggings are. Sure, a midi dress might feel more “special” or “fancy” than those other two items, but like I said above, you can style one in a much more casual way if you’re looking to upgrade your day-to-day outfits.

In case you need some inspo on how to style a midi dress, I’m including a handful of outfit ideas below. These looks would work for so many different seasons and outings, whether you’re heading on a date night, running errands, or meeting friends for happy hour.

Trust me, you’l be reaching for this comfy yet chic staple a lot more than you might think.

How to Style a Midi Dress

Style a midi dress with knee high boots.

If you feel like a midi dress would only work with sandals or heels, think again. One of my favorite ways to wear a midi dress is actually with knee high boots. This look is obviously ideal for fall and winter weather, but it’s also a good option during transitional seasons.

Knee high boots are a classic piece that you can wear with many different wardrobe staples, like jeans, skirts, and of course dresses. Reach for this combo whenever you need some extra warmth (or even on a rainy day!)

Play up your accessories.

You guys know I am the self-proclaimed queen of accessories, so it should come as no surprise that I always like to layer on the jewelry when putting together a midi dress outfit. Even if you don’t consider yourself to be a big jewelry gal, I’d challenge you to play around with accessories. Honestly, they just give everything a more styled feel—and they give you the chance to show off more of your personality.

Keep in mind that the accessories you use don’t have to be just jewelry. Try adding a hat, some fun sunglasses, or a cute handbag to your outfit. Any of those items will add dimension to your overall look.

Add a leather or denim jacket over your midi dress.

If I had to guess, I would say it’s a safe bet to say you already have a denim or leather jacket in your closet. If so, use either to layer over your midi dress. The combo is not only practical, but it looks adorable to wear on an everyday basis.

Plus, you can have fun with this and go with a white leather jacket or a black denim jacket if you want to switch things up (and give your outfit a more unexpected feel.)

Wear sandals or heels with your midi dress.

Sandals and heels are an obvious shoe choice when thinking about what to wear with a midi dress. Even though it might seem basic, there’s something about this combo that looks so feminine and chic. One bonus to this outfit idea is that you could easily wear a midi dress and sandals throughout the day, then swap them for heels when you head to dinner.

Go casual with sneakers.

Looking for a more laid-back midi dress outfit? You can’t go wrong by styling one with sneakers. This is the ideal outfit choice to wear on weekends or when grabbing a cup of coffee. Again, you could totally wear this during the day and then switch out your shoes if you’re heading out at night.

Midi Dress Outfit Ideas

Need some more midi dress outfit ideas? Here are five options that you could wear, regardless of the weather or occasion. Each outfit is styled with a different midi dress, which are all so unique yet neutral enough to get a lot of wear from.

Midi Dress With Heels

If you’re heading to a girls night out or to brunch with friends, try out this look. It’s easy to put together, and I love that all the pieces can be mixed and matched with other outfits.

Incorporating jewelry, like these dainty gold earrings, will take the outfit up a notch, while sticking with a neutral bag will give things a more uniform look. Oh, and I’m eyeing these heeled sandals, but any heels would do.

Midi Dress With Sneakers and a Denim Jacket

When you want to give your midi dress a more casual feel, throw a denim jacket on (even if you just place it over your shoulders.)

This is the ideal outfit for busy mom days. Got a soccer game to head to? Slip into this look. Running your kids to appointments? This outfit will keep you comfortable while ensuring you look put-together.

I’m a big fan of the way these Rag & Bone sneakers bring together the hints of brown in this look (in a lighter way) but you could also wear white sneakers if that’s more your thing. Just add a suede tote bag and a cute necklace and you’ll be set for a full day ahead.

Midi Dress With a Leather Jacket

I mentioned above that a midi dress is an obvious choice for a date night outfit, and this look offers the perfect proof. Layering on a striped sweater can give your midi dress a major cool-girl feel, while doubling as a practical way to keep cozy.

I’d wear some trendy ballet flats with this outfit, like this red pair, then accessorize with a simple bag and some understated earrings (this pair is under $44.) If you’re craving a pop of color, consider going with a bold lip!

Midi Dress With Sandals

Is there anything better than a cute vacation look? This could totally serve as your summer “uniform.” Just snag a few midi dresses you love and switch up your sandals and accessories to give each outfit its own moment to shine.

A good hat always adds so much visual interest to an outfit, and this straw find is certainly no exception. You could also go with a black sun hat. And the same rings true when it comes to bags—like this large tote or this smaller option.

Midi Dress With Knee High Boots

Finally, there’s no dreamier duo than a midi dress with knee high boots. While this look doesn’t take much effort to put together, it somehow looks highly styled and elevated—which is always a win in my book.

If you want to make things look even dressier, try adding a trench coat and some statement sunglasses.
