How to Plan a Family Trip to Miami

family trip to miami

Traveling with family is the best, especially as your kids get older and can appreciate going on getaways a bit more. It always makes for such special times when my whole family can travel together and create memories that will last a lifetime.

If you’re anything like me and you love a luxe vacay but also want something that’s family-friendly, this Miami travel guide is for you.

From lots of experience through the years, I can confidently say that Miami is the perfect destination for you and your family. I know my kids absolutely love playing in the water and hanging out at the beach (it’s one of their happy places) but aside from that, there’s so much more that this Florida city has to offer.

Although I usually try to soak up as much sun as possible, there are tons of great activities, restaurants, and sights worth seeing during a trip to Miami. Plus, you simply can’t beat a morning cup of coffee with a beach view in the background.

Oh, and if you’re feeling extra adventurous, you can extend your Miami trip and head up to the many Disney parks in Orlando, Florida.

From where to stay, what to do, and where to eat, you can find all my tips on planning a family trip to Miami below!

The Ultimate Family Trip to Miami

After you’ve checked out this travel guide, be sure to browse all of my recommendations for a girls trip to Miami. And if you need more family-friendly vacation ideas, consider a getaway to Destin, Florida!

Where to Stay in Miami, Florida

There’s no denying that there are many incredible hotels in Miami, specifically in South Beach, but sometimes the options can feel overwhelming. When I travel with my family, I often prefer to stay in an Airbnb so we can all feel more comfortable and more at home. Especially when being in Miami and coming in and out with sandy toes, a home rental allows us to have a bit more flexibility.

If you prefer the vibe of a hotel property with amenities and restaurants built right in, here are some of my favorites in the area.

Kimpton Surfcomber Hotel

Looking to indulge in the luxury of hotel life? The Kimpton Surfcomber is in a great location—and bonus—it’s newly renovated! The updated art deco vibes are super cute and trendy. The property is also a short and easy walk to Fillmore Beach, Lummus Park, the Bass Museum of Art, and the Miami Beach Botanical Gardens. If any of those sightseeing spots are on your bucket list, the Kimpton would be a practical hotel choice.

W South Beach

From studios to suites, the W South Beach has a wide range of oceanfront accommodations. Honestly, just exploring the hotel will keep your whole family busy for a good chunk of time. While your kids are enjoying the rooftop tennis and basketball courts, you could kick back and enjoy a rejuvenating treatment at the AWAY Spa.

The Setai Miami Beach

Prefer something that feels even more unique and special? The Setai is the ultimate high-end location that perfectly ties together the South Beach scene and refined hospitality. This property is more secluded than others found in the area, which is why I like it as an option for families.

What to Do in Miami, Florida

While beach days are certainly hard to beat, there is so much more to Miami than the amazing Atlantic. This city is rich with culture, food, nature, art, and so much more. It’s hard to condense everything into just one list, but here are some fun family activities to do around Miami and beyond.

Zoo Miami

Going to the zoo is one of our favorite family activities when traveling—and I know I would feel much more comfortable seeing the local Florida alligators in a safe environment! For an extra special trip, try out the Safari Cycle rental at Zoo Miami—such a fun way to explore the zoo grounds. Just be sure to plan ahead as they can sell out.

Jungle Island

Time to tire out the kids? Head to Jungle Island, which is the ultimate playground for kids (and adults.) There is no shortage of fun to be had—animal encounters, treetop trekking, gardens, and more.

If you want to end your day with a bit of relaxation, head to Joia Beach. This hidden oasis is the cutest spot to grab a tasty lunch or dinner while you unwind from a busy day.

Boat Tours

Itching to get out on the beautiful blue water? Book a boat tour! Miami on the Water is great because they have sightseeing boat tours that are super easy to book. For the trill-seekers in the family, there are speedboat options as well as parasailing. Personally, I’d opt for the private sunset tour (a fun choice for families or couples.)

Aventura Mall

Aventura Mall is the perfect blend of family-friendly and luxury. This mall is soooo nice and it has so many quality stores. There are plenty of shops to browse, restaurants to check out, and event/art exhibits that will keep your family occupied all day long.

Orlando, Florida

If you want to extend your Miami trip and venture outside of the city for even more family fun, I recommend making the drive to Orlando (which is roughly 3.5 hours away.)

During out most recent family trip to Miami, the only park we went into was EPCOT. For those who are unfamiliar with this park, it’s definitely not your traditional “theme park,” but honestly, you might like it even better.

EPCOT blends future technology with global experience. You can literally eat (and drink) your way around the world, which makes for an experience that kids and adults universally love.

For accommodations, I would check out the AC Hotel or The Drury Hotel. Both are super clean (which I really appreciate) and they’re budget-friendly which is ideal for a quick stay like ours.

Where to Eat in Miami, Florida

Miami is undoubtedly known for its vibrant culture, which makes the food scene nothing short of amazing. From street food to luxury dining experiences, the options are as diverse and dynamic as the city itself. Again, it’s hard to narrow down the options, but here are some of my favorite spots to eat in Miami.

GG’s Waterfront Restaurant

Before we hopped in the car to Miami we stopped at GG’s in Hollywood. If you want to load up on a good meal before a big beach day, I definitely recommend this place—10/10! The food, the service, the vibes and the overall ambiance were incredible.

Hoshi & Sushi Asian Cuisine

We ordered so much food from this spot that I can’t even begin to pick a favorite. Aside from the dishes, the atmosphere and service at Hoshi & Sushi were top-notch (which is always so important to me.) If you have the chance to go, I recommend ordering the Latino Roll, the Godfather Roll, and the Mango Mochi, but you really can’t go wrong with anything on the menu.

Baires Grill

Wow….just wow. I was so excited to eat at Baires Grill and it definitely did not disappoint. The whole family ordered different steaks. Sammy and I got the skirt steak for two, which came with the creamiest mashed potatoes and spinach. Everything was delicious! Tip: Whatever you do, do not pass up the dessert menu at the end of the night!

Cafe Prima Pasta

To say that I’m obsessed with this restaurant would be an understatement. I think Cafe Prima Pasta is my new favorite restaurant in Miami. All I can say is this is a must-visit on your next trip. I cannot wait to come back and I am still drooling over the Penne Vodka, Shrimp Scampi, and Crab Ravioli that we ordered. Highly recommend all three of these dishes!
