A Dreamy Trip to Bedford, PA (and Why it Should Be on Your Bucket List)

We have been very much on the go this summer, and honestly, it has made this season fly by even more quickly than usual. I know summer is always busy (especially for families) but I really do love this time of year. The longer days, extra time with my kids, and quality vacations make for the sweetest memories.

While I’ve been on girlfriend getaways and work trips a lot these past few months, I’ve also been lucky enough to head out on a handful of family vacations. Our most recent trip was to Bedford, Pennsylvania, and boy did we have the best time.

I realize that this PA town might not be at the top of your bucket list, but after visiting just once, I think this spot should be talked about much more. It was the most charming destination for a little family trip, and truly has something unique to offer to every type of traveler.

It’s rare that I go somewhere and actually feel like I got in a good dose of R&R, but Bedford was the exception. We stayed at the Omni Bedford Springs Resort and are already planning our next visit back (yes, it was that good.) I also think it would be one of the dreamiest destinations to visit during the fall months.

Whether you live within road trip distance of Bedford, PA or you’re planning a trip specifically to the area, I’m spilling all the details of our trip below. Happy planning!

Where to Stay in Bedford, PA

When we first started planning our getaway to Bedford, we were pleased to find out that it was only a two hour drive from the DC area. It was so easy to get there yet it felt like we were far away from home — always a win in my book.

Like I mentioned above, we ended up staying at the Omni Bedford Springs Resort and if you have ever stayed at an Omni property, you know they are fully worth the hype. Everything from the upkeep of the grounds to the service and overall hospitality was exceptional. The property itself was stunning and expansive — it felt like we had much of the resort to ourselves.

While we were staying there, the hotel was actually ranked as the best resort in the Mid-Atlantic by Travel & Leisure. The property has a highly patriotic feel to it, which adds unique charm that’s hard to find these days. It was decked out in red, white, and blue decor (we went around the 4th of July) and had adorable little details, like string lights and striped umbrellas all throughout the grounds.

Another touch that I found special was the wide range of seating options around the property, including rocking chairs and chaise lounges. Pretty much anywhere you went you could find a cozy spot to post up with a cocktail or cup of coffee (the ultimate way to unwind.)

At night, they offered s’mores and my kids were totally thrilled about it. Plus, the pool was a major highlight and makes this the ideal all-American vacation spot during the summer.

Another highlight was how spacious and updated the rooms were. I loved that they had a historical feel while still being on the more modern and upscale side. We had a pretty large balcony off of our room, and it was such a treat to be able to sit outside in the morning with a cup of coffee. The room service was also superior and is a great option for families.

One thing to note is that there are essentially two “sides” to the resort — a new build section and a more historical side. We stayed in the new build part of the resort in one of the suites but you definitely can’t go wrong regardless of where you stay.

Best Time to Visit Bedford, PA

Although it was just me and the kids visiting Bedford this time around, I would definitely go back with a group of friends next time. It would also make for a great solo trip destination or even a couples getaway. Plus, if you live in Pennsylvania or close spots in Maryland, you could easily do a day trip to visit the spa.

We loved going in the summer so we could take full advantage of the pool, biking scene, and nearby walking trails. However, since it’s located in the Allegheny Mountains, I do think fall would be a special time to visit (the fall foliage would be stunning!) I’m sure that winter also has a unique charm, so all this is to say that there isn’t really a bad time to visit.

Things to Do in Bedford, PA

To be totally honest, we spent pretty much all of our time on the Omni property during our trip. It was too nice to leave! I know that Bedford has a variety of activities to offer, like architecture tours, downtown shopping, hiking, museums, and more, but there’s so much to do right at the Omni that you really don’t have to venture out if you don’t want to.

At the resort, they offer biking, ATV experiences, archery, an outdoor and indoor pool, tennis, etc. It’s also set on a huge golf course, so if you’re into that, then you’ll be in paradise. Aside from traditional activities and sports, there are plenty of cute shops that you can take a bike ride to. Oh, and they offer a history tour on the property (if your kids are into historical facts, they will love this!)

I also have to mention that the spa at the Omni is absolutely to die for. It was truly one of the best massages I’ve ever had in my life. I’ve been to a lot of spas in a lot of different places but I would go back here just to use the spa. This would be perfect for a girls trip or couples getaway.

As far as meals go, there are four restaurants at the Omni so you have plenty of options to choose from during your stay. There’s also a coffee shop for your morning caffeine fix and a lobby bar where you can order cocktails from before roaming around the property.

We really enjoyed eating at the golf clubhouse for lunch and soaked up all the pretty mountain views. They also have great room service and are well staffed with plenty of servers at the pool — and trust me, there’s nothing like kicking back in a lounge chair with a frozen drink!

We really had the sweetest time together in Bedford and I’m so glad that we gave this little town a chance. I didn’t know much about the area prior to our trip but I’m looking forward to going back with Soon sometime in the future!
